Ducati withdraws factory support for 2011 Ducati has won 13 of the 22 titles since the World Superbike Championship began in 1988. Ducati will not compete in the 2011 World Superbike Championship in a factory-backed capacity, it has been announced. The Italian manufacturer, the most successful brand in the history of the production-based series, has made the shock decision as part of plans to transfer its resources into product development instead. As a result, it will scale back its direct involvement in the championship but will continue to provide some support to customer teams. “This decision is part of a specific strategy made by Ducati, the aim being to further increase technological content in production models that will arrive on the market in the coming years,” said Ducati CEO Gabriele Del Torchio. “In order to achieve this objective, the company's technical resources, until now engaged with the management of the factory Superbike team, will instead be dedicated to the development of the new generation of hypersport bikes, in both their homologated and Superbike race versions. “I would like to thank Nori and Michel, and all of the riders that have contributed to the great history of Ducati in Superbike, but above all the Ducati employees; it is their hard work and professionalism that has allowed us to achieve such important results. “A big thank you also to all of the partners that have supported us, first and foremost Xerox of course. I would also like to acknowledge the Flammini brothers who have managed the championship for so long, and the FIM, the organization with which we have continuous, constructive relations.” Ducati's official withdrawal will come as a major blow to the World Superbike Championship, not least because of the manufacturer's immense success at this level over the years and marketing pull. Since 1988, Ducati has won 16 titles, 285 wins and 704 podiums - no other manufacturer can get close to these tallies. While Ducati has always been well represented by customer teams, not least in 2010 with Carlos Checa leading the factory outfit for Althea Racing, it remains to be seen exactly what support they will offer in 2011. Nonetheless, Ducati maintains the customer teams will be well looked after. "The task of testing innovative technical solutions in Superbike racing will therefore be entrusted to external teams in the coming years, teams that will have the chance to receive technical support from Ducati personnel. "This choice will allow the teams to benefit from even more competitive machines and parts." Ducati's announcement comes as they are on the cusp of losing their manufacturers' crown to Italian rivals Aprilia.

Ducati hints regulations affected pull-out decision
Ducati hints that the move towards 'competition between prototypes' affected its decision to withdraw from the World Superbike Championship. While Ducati maintains a desire to focus on its production models is the main impetus to withdraw from the World Superbike Championship, it suggests its continued dissatisfaction with the regulations are also factors in its decision.
Ducati will not participate in the World Superbike Championship as a factory-backed entity in 2011 due changes in its marketing strategy to focus on road-based models.
However, the official document that confirms their intentions do suggest the continued regulation changes are an additional motivation towards its decision to quit.
Insisting the changes are 'moving towards competition between prototypes' rather than production-based bikes, Ducati also claims it isn't in its best interests to participate in this way financially.
“Recently the Superbike World Championship, according to the current regulations, has been interpreted as moving more towards competition between prototypes rather than for bikes derived from production machines. This has led to an increase in costs, both for the manufacturers and the teams participating in the championship.
“This picture does not correlate with the current worldwide economic situation, which has made the securing of sponsorship even more difficult. Ducati trusts that the work carried out by all parties will lead to improvement also in this area.”
Even so, Ducati will continue to have a say in future regulation changes, suggesting a return could be on the cards in the near future.
“Despite the decision to interrupt its official participation in the World Superbike Championship, Ducati will continue to work, in collaboration with the championship organizers, other manufacturers and the FIM, to define a technical regulation aimed at containing costs.
“Strong in the sporting spirit that has always allowed this manufacturer to compete, line-up against its rivals, and win, it is fundamental for Ducati to identify, together with the other interested parties, solutions that can guarantee the future of the championship in the medium-long term.”
Hopefully they are just waving a big stick. jack

Infront ‘surprised’ by Ducati quit decision
Ducati will withdraw its factory support for the 2011 World Superbike season, but will continue to supply customer teams. World Superbike Championship promoters Infront Motor Sports have expressed their 'disappointment and surprise' at Ducati's decision to withdraw from the series due to disagreements over equalisation.
Ducati made the shock decision to quit the championship it has won in 16 of the last 22 seasons yesterday [Friday], citing a motivation to concentrate on production based models.
However, despite this, the Italian manufacturer did hint that a dissatisfaction of the regulations to equalise their 1200cc twin-cylinder machine with the 1000cc four-cylinder machines was an additional factor.
With this in mind, Infront CEO Paolo Flammini is frustrated that Ducati has taken the sudden decision to walk away, adding that they have been constant negotiation with teams over how to keep competition fair. It also points out that while Ducati lost out on the 2009 title to Yamaha, it would have dominated without the presence of Ben Spies.
"We are disappointed and also a bit surprised at Ducati's decision especially since we have been asked numerous times for a change in the regulations to bring about a better balancing of twin-cylinder 1200cc machines towards the four-cylinder 1000cc bikes.
“It must be mentioned that last year, without the presence of a phenomenal Ben Spies, the Ducati 1198 would have dominated the championship with Haga and Fabrizio, and it is therefore difficult for us today to comprehend this decision, which of course we must respect.”
The statement concludes that the regulators had a duty to maintain parity with the six remaining manufacturers, rather than just focus on a single one.
“Moreover the FIM Superbike World Championship can today boast the participation of six manufacturers in addition to Ducati, with Aprilia, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha and is therefore obliged to maintain a total balance in the regulations, without privileging one or other manufacturer in particular.”
Ducati will continue to supply machines to customer teams into 2011.

Parkes quits Echo CRS Honda
The former Kawasaki rider has scored just nine points since joining the rookie Italian outift. Broc Parkes has announced that he has parted company with the Echo CRS Honda team ahead of the eleventh round of the World Superbike Championship.
Parkes joined the fledgling WSBK outfit at the beginning of the season having been dropped by the factory Kawasaki team, but has struggled for form on the Honda CBR1000RR.
Released from his contract in the week, Parkes is now looking for opportunities to continue racing this season and in the future.
While he has focused on Superbike racing over the last two years, Parkes has achieved the majority of his success in the Supersport category having won five races and 23 podiums, while he was runner-up in 2004 and 2007.
Echo CRS made its WSBK debut in 2010 after a season spent in the World Supersport Championship.

Parkesy has gone 7th in 1st timed sess at Nurburgring yesterday. Not too shabby as less than 0.5 secs off teammate Fujiwara. Go AUSSIE! ;D
Broc Parkes, who parted company with the Echo CRS Honda Superbike team earlier this week, will not be out of action for much longer as he immediately steps into the Spanish Kawasaki Motocard.com World Supersport squad this weekend to replace the injured Joan Lascorz. Parkes will take part in the final three races of the season in Germany, Italy and France.
World Supersport runner-up in 2007, the 28 year-old Parkes is one of the most expert riders around in the category and he comes to the Nurburgring on the back of a test last week at Almeria on the Kawasaki ZX-6R with which he will tackle the final part of the championship.
The rider he replaces, Lascorz, who crashed and was injured at Silverstone, is continuing to recover at the Deseux Institute in Barcelona and will undergo surgery this week to speed up the healing of his left leg.

Yamaha Sterilgarda confirms Marco Melandri for 2011
Sunday, 05 September 2010 22:59 The Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team has signed an agreement with Italian MotoGP rider Marco Melandri to join the World Superbike Championship for the 2011 race season. 28 year-old Melandri will replace current Yamaha Superbike rider Cal Crutchlow who stays within the Yamaha family, moving to MotoGP to replace Ben Spies on The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 M1 bike.
Melandri is a former 250cc GP World Champion and has finished as high as 2nd in the MotoGP Championship with five MotoGP race victories to date in his career and a further 10 250ccGP victories.
"I'm very happy with this new challenge, it's a big change and I want to fight for world superbike wins," said Marco Melandri. "It's nice to be back with Yamaha; I know many people there; I was very young when I rode with them before, now I'm much more mature. As the reigning 2009 champions The Yamaha Sterilgarda Team have proved to have a very competitive package and are one of the top teams in World Superbike. I realize Superbike is not easy and I know I have to work hard. I'm looking forward to feeling the adrenalin again and fighting for the championship."
"Marco is a great signing for the World Superbike Team. He has massive experience at the pinnacle of motorcycle racing and is extremely motivated to have the opportunity to challenge for race wins again. Whilst it is sad to see Cal leave us to move on up in the Yamaha family we are excited to have a serious title contender such as Marco joining us," said Yamaha Motor Europe Racing Manager Laurens Klein Koerkamp.
Mail also has it that Davide Tardozzi is to leave BMW and go with Marco to Yamaha

Broc Parkes Promoted to 3rd placeGino Rea has his second place finish at the Nurburgring taken away from him due to a breach of regulations. Gino Rea has been excluded from the World Supersport race at the Nurburgring after his Intermoto Czech Honda was found to be in breach of the regulations. The youngster had been celebrating his career-best result of second place after a thrilling exchange between himself and eventual race winner Eugene Laverty around the German circuit. However, technical checks after the race found the CBR600RR to not conform, though the official reason hasn't been revealed. As well as proving a bitter disappointment for Rea, who had pushed Laverty from start-to-finish, it also proves detrimental to Laverty's title hopes as Kenan Sofuoglu is promoted to second place. It means the Turk's advantage in the standings grows to 13 points and means he can still finish second behind Laverty in the final two races and win the title. Broc Parkes is also promoted to third on his return to Supersport competition with Kawasaki.

LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM HE WAS THE MAN IN 2010 Crash.net's WSBK top ten: 1st Max Biaggi proves he is still a world class rider with a dominant performance with Aprilia in 2010. 1. Max Biaggi As far as title-winning performances go, Max Biaggi's run to the 2010 World Superbike Championship was pretty much faultless. While things were certainly close at the mid-way stage in the season, ten wins and not a single DNF ensured Biaggi came away as the dominant – and deserving – winner of the season. As such, it is little surprise that we consider Biaggi as the top World Superbike rider of 2010, the 'Roman Emperor' ruling his kingdom once again with his first world title in 13 years. Having shown hints of what was to come with a strong end to the 2009 season, a period in which Biaggi and Aprilia had seemingly unlocked the potential of the RSV-4, the pair went into the 2010 season quietly confident of launching a challenge. Benefitting from having a team working around him – a privilege he couldn't get with Suzuki and Sterilgarda Ducati -, Biaggi was flourishing in his surroundings, dominating the second round at Portimao to lay down the challenge to early leader Leon Haslam. Doubling up again at Monza, though Biaggi trailed Haslam at the mid-way stage in the season – blame fairly anonymous outings at Phillip Island and Assen -, a mid-season rout of seven wins from ten races catapulted him into a comfortable title-elect role. Showing effortless ability to maximise the RSV-4's potential, which rivals noted had a distinct advantage at the start of the races and in a straight-line, the bike was also bullet-proof in reliability. Indeed, Aprilia should also receive immense praise for producing a bike that, in only its second season, led its rivals in most key areas. To put into context, you have to go back to 2005 and Troy Corser for the last time a title was won with not a single DNF on their record, while his eventual 75 point margin over the consistent Haslam is one of the largest on record. A slightly unspectacular end to the season – just one podium over the last eight races – will give rivals hope for 2011, but this year proved Biaggi is almost unbeatable when things are working around him. As Aprilia's new favoured son, there is no reason to suggest that things will be any different in 2011. Statistics: Team: Aprilia Alitalia Bike: Aprilia RSV-4 Championship position: 1st Points: 451 Race starts: 26 Pole positions: 2 Victories: 10 Podiums: 14 Best results: 1st (Portimao, Monza, Miller, Misano, Brno, Magny-Cours) Points finishes: 26 Crash.net's WSBK Top 10 1. Max Biaggi 2. Leon Haslam 3. Carlos Checa 4. Cal Crutchlow 5. Jonathan Rea 6. Leon Camier 7. Tom Sykes 8. Troy Corser 9. Noriyuki Haga 10. Sylvain Guintoli

Vermeulen hails bike ahead of racing return
Chris Vermeulen returns to World Superbike racing at Assen, the Australian eager to make the most of the much improved Kawasaki. Chris Vermeulen is looking forward to returning to World Superbike racing after completing a significant amount of testing between rounds ahead of Assen.
The Australian made his WSBK return at Donington Park, following several months out through injury, though he would manage just one day of running before deciding to preserve his knee.
Since then, Vermeulen has conducted more intensive tests on the Kawasaki ZX-10R in an effort to get back to race fitness, most recently completing several laps at Brands Hatch.
It means Vermeulen has been given the opportunity to compare the new ZX-10R with that of its predecessor, the former MotoGP race winner labelling it as a 'big step forward'
“My impressions of the new bike are all positive. Kawasaki has done an amazing job with it and I am just excited to look at the development of this bike, even thought it is in the early stages.
“I think the biggest difference on the new model comes from the chassis, the balance and the character the bike has in turning. Also the electronics are a big step forward. The engine feels smoother even thought it is more powerful, and the whole bike is what we need to compete.”

Paul Bird Motorsport issues a statement regarding claims illegal items were found on a truck belonging to them.
Paul Bird Motorsport has reacted to allegations that banned substances were discovered in one of their World Superbike team trucks, stating that it has no connection to the items found.
A report in the Daily Telegraph claimed UK Border Agency are stepping up security of motorsport transportation after finding drugs and a firearm on a truck as it came through Dover port.
However, the team says no team member was detained beyond the time of the search and it is co-operating fully with HM Customs in their investigations.
The full statement from Paul Bird Motorsport reads:
Following media speculation, Paul Bird Motorsport can confirm that a quantity of banned substances had been deposited in a race transporter while the vehicle was in Holland attending the recent Assen World Superbike event.
The substances, along with a number of other illegal items, were discovered upon the vehicle's return to the UK at the port of Dover during a routine examination by HM Customs.
Naturally, the discovery came as a shock to the whole team, including those who were present during the search. The team are confident that no team member has any connection whatsoever with the items discovered. No one has been detained after the time of the search and all team members are able to undertake their normal duties.
There is no suggestion of the Paul Bird Motorsport Team being involved in illegal activities and no other team members have been interviewed following the incident. The team staff present at the time of the search and discovery enjoy the full support and confidence of the team and all involved are determined to offer their full cooperation to HM Customs in their ongoing investigations.
Understandably, the team are now taking stringent measures to increase the security of their vehicles as they travel throughout Europe in future. Despite the personal effect on the team, Paul Bird Motorsport will be attending the next World Superbike event at Monza, Italy at full strength and with a determination to focus on the Championship.

32-strong entry for WSS 2012
The World Supersport Championship will have 32 full-time riders in 2012, including Broc Parkes on the Ten Kate Honda.
The provisional 2012 World Supersport Championship entry list has been unveiled with 32 riders set to participate in the series full-time this season.
The strong entry list is headed up by Honda, which has 17 representatives on the grid, including six bikes prepared by PTR, though eight-time champions Ten Kate Racing will slim down to just a single machine for Broc Parkes in 2012.
Kawasaki, meanwhile, are presenting a promising five-strong line-up in 2012, luring 2007 and 2010 champion Kenan Sofuoglu to its new factory-backed DeltaFin team, alongside Sheridan Morais, while Fabien Foret – who finished third in 2011 – will ride a ZX-6R prepared by Czech outfit Intermoto Step Racing.
Having been taken to title glory by ParkinGO in 2011, there will be nine versions of the Yamaha YZF-R6 this season, including one for Superstock 600 champion Jed Metcher, who joins the Russian RivaMoto team. Interestingly, having previously announced it would run a Kawasaki for Jules Cluzel, WTR Ten 10 Racing are now classified as entering a Yamaha for Massimo Roccoli.
Other notable entrants include Superstock 1000 front runner Andrea Antonelli on a Lorini Honda alongside Roberto Tamburini, plus new two-man entries from the East European and VFT teams.
Missing from the list, however, is three-time WSS race winner Luca Scassa, who was linked with a possible ride on an MV Agusta prepared by Team Alstare, though the team speculated that any entry would come later in the season. There is also no sign of Florian Marino – eighth in 2011 – and WSS veteran Robbin Harms.

Indonesia to host WSBK?
Indonesia's Sentul circuit said to be hosting World Superbike from 2013-2015.
The World Superbike Championship could make a long-awaited return to Asia in 2013 with reports that a deal has been agreed with Indonesia's Sentul circuit.
While there has been no official announcement from Infront Sports & Media, rights holders for WSBK, Tinton Soeprapto, director of PT Sarana Sirkuitindo Utama - which manages the Sentul International Circuit - told local media that a deal has been signed for 2013-2015.
An agreement was also announced to host a round of the Superstars Car Racing Championship, also organised by the Flamini brothers/FG Sport, from 2012-2014.
”The contract value of one Superstars series [event] is around 3 million to 4 million euro/year or 35,65 billion rupiahs to 47,53 billion rupiahs/year. The Superbike contract is also around that value,” Tinton told Kompas.com, adding that the money was coming from private sponsors and not the government.”
Sentul aims to use the WSBK and Superstars events as a springboard to hosting furture grand prix rounds. The circuit is currently being re-surfaced to reach 'international standard'.
”Having international bike and car championships in Indonesia will lift the name of Indonesia worldwide. Also, if Indonesia holds those events successfully, it will be easier to hold F1 and MotoGP in this country,” said Tinton.
Sentul last hosted a WSBK event from 1994 to 1997. Rounds in Malaysia and Japan also featured on the WSBK calendar during the 1990s.
However, an Asian event has been absent from the schedule ever since the 2003 round in Sugo, Japan - the Japanese manufacturers having subsequently withdrawn 'official' support for the series over the 2004 technical rules.
Sentul had been provisionally named on the 2008 WSBK calendar, but didn't make the final cut, while rumours of a deal with Sepang in Malaysia have run off-and-on in recent years.
Indonesia is one of the most important markets for motorcycle sales in the world and its significance to the major motorcycle manufacturers has grown even further following the financial crisis.
