Sylvain Guintoli confirmed at Aprilia
Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty are charged with defending Aprilia's World Superbike Championship crown in 2013.
Aprilia has confirmed Sylvain Guintoli will join its factory team for the 2013 World Superbike Championship in place of retired champion Max Biaggi.
The Frenchman has been widely tipped to be joining the Italian manufacturer after appearing on the firm's RSV-4 alongside Eugene Laverty during testing at Jerez this week, but only now has Aprilia formally confirmed it.
Guintoli comes to Aprilia after stints on Suzuki and Ducati machinery over the past three seasons, the three-time race winner thrilled to be joining the championship winning team for 2013.
“I am very happy, especially because the feeling with the RSV4 has been good right from the first few metres,” he said. “To be able to sit in the saddle of the world champion bike is a great opportunity for me - one of the most important in my career.
“I think the bike has extremely high potential, as we've seen in the past few years, and I'm confident that I'll be able to put in some excellent results with it.”
With Guintoli impressing with his immediate pace on the RSV-4 during testing, Aprilia sporting director Gigi Dall'Igna was delighted to be welcoming the 30-year-old for next season.
“Sylvain is a great addition to our team and we were very keen to have him. His excellent first contact with the RSV4 during the tests held at Jerez were also encouraging. He proved to be a fast and solid rider straight away. He and Laverty will make a team to be reckoned with.
“We're preparing for the new season now. We have the world champion bike and two capable riders who always aim for top results, so I think we'll have fun.”
Guintoli, a former MotoGP rider, won three races – one with Effenbert Liberty Ducati and two with Pata Ducati – in 2012 on the way to seventh in the overall standings.

Laverty quickest on day three at Jerez
Ducati and BMW join Kawasaki and Aprilia for a day of World Superbike testing at Jerez, with Eugene Laverty going fastest of all.
Aprilia and Kawasaki concluded their final day of World Superbike testing ahead of the imminent winter ban by outpacing BMW and Ducati during day three of testing at Jerez, with Eugene Laverty emerging quickest of all.
The two manufacturers were completing the last of a three-day test at the Spanish venue, whereas BMW and Ducati were embarking on their first visit to Jerez.
Not surprisingly, Aprilia and Kawasaki had the edge on their incoming rivals, Laverty setting the best time of the test thus far at 1min 40.185secs, ahead of Tom Sykes, who was accredited with an unofficial time of 1min 40.440secs.
Michel Fabrizio continued to show impressive pace on the privateer Red Devils Roma Aprilia, the Italian emerging marginally ahead of Sylvain Guintoli, who has finally been confirmed as Aprilia's second factory rider for the 2013 World Superbike season.
Loris Baz rounded out the top five on the next Kawasaki, three tenths up on Marco Melandri, the BMW Italia rider getting down to business by lapping as the fastest of the 'new arrivals' at 1min 41.800secs.
Indeed, the Italian was considerably quicker than Carlos Checa in eighth place (behind Aprilia test rider Alex Hofmann), the 2011 champion lapping his Alstare Ducati 1199 Panigale in a best of 1min 43.089secs.
He was followed by Chaz Davies on the second of the BMW Italia machines, the Welshman setting a best time of 1min 43.400secs.
Rounding out the timesheets was series returnee Max Neukirchner, making his group test debut on the MR Ducati, and Ayrton Badovini, who was getting his first trial on the Panigale having been confirmed with Alstare earlier this month.
While Aprilia and Kawasaki, along with Honda, have concluded their WSBK campaign for 2012, Ducati and BMW will continue at Jerez until Friday.

Aussie young gun Davies in PTR Honda move
'I am very excited about joining PTR for my first season in World Supersport. As a rookie I could not have asked for a better team to help with my development' - Matt Davies
Hot teenage prospect Matt Davies is another addition to PTR Honda's extensive World Supersport line-up in 2013.
The young Australian rider cut his teeth in off-road racing in his homeland before travelling to England to compete in the Superteen and British 125cc Championships.
Davies won the first European Junior Cup Championship in 2011 before switching to the European Superstock 600 series this year.
He will join the PTR Honda team at Jerez in Spain on January 22, his 17th birthday, for pre-season testing.
“I will have a lot to learn but I know I will have the right people around me to help me achieve the best results. I will get my first ride on the PTR Honda on my 17th birthday and I cannot wait.”
Team manager Simon Buckmaster, who has tipped Davies for a future career in World Superbikes and MotoGP, said he was 'excited' by the potential of the young racer.
“Matt is only 17 in January and has already shown great potential.
“PTR has in most cases worked with young riders and when the chance came around to work with Matt we were excited about what we could achieve together in the coming seasons to see Matt grow as a rider,” said Buckmaster.
“There is no pressure on him in 2013; we just want to work with him to achieve the best we can as he steps up to a full World Championship.
“After that I am sure we will see Matt challenging for the Supersport title and then on into WSB or MotoGP.
“He has ridden in the UK as well, so support for him from Australia and the UK will be a great boost.”

Aussie Supersport Winning Team goes to WSS in 2013 The 2012 Australian Supersport Championship winning Team Aark Racing is announcing its commitment to the 2013 World Supersport championships. The Aark Racing Team had a stellar 2012 season, winning the Australian Supersport championship. Team owner Andy Offer has set his sights on tackling the World scene in 2013 with the Triumph 675R under the Aark Racing banner. Andy says "It has always been a goal of mine to own and manage a team on the World scene. With the team’s achievements in 2012 at the Australian level, I believe it is time to take what we have learned to the next level”. Riding the Aark racing Triumph will be Mitchell Carr. After Mitchell winning his first Australian Supersport title, Mitchell is looking ahead and believes that the team has the package to be extremely competitive. "The team has prepared a great bike throughout the 2012 season, testing has been very positive and the bike is coming ahead in leaps and bounds. After winning the Australian Supersport Championship title this season, I am so grateful for Aark Racing to give me this great opportunity to contest the World Supersport Championship", says Mitchell. The Team has been developing a World Supersport Triumph 675R this current season, with the results exceeding the team’s expectations. The bike has adapted to the Pirelli Tyres and Motec electronics with ease. Our bikes contesting the World Supersport Championship will showcase race prepared engines and K-Tech suspension both developed using Australian expertise in Australia. “As many of the Australian riders venturing overseas this year will be riding for European teams, our team is a bit unique in that we will be a fully owned and managed Australian Team. I believe this will lift the profile of motorcycle racing in Australia” Andy says. We proved we have a winning formula and are excited to test our skills at the world level. We expect that we will once again be able to represent our loyal sponsors with pride and anticipate a great year for our new sponsors and any potential sponsors coming on board.
