Hi guys, I'm an american hypermotard owner. We are moving to Perth, where my wife is from and I'd like to bring my bike. Do you any of you know about the import process? Thanks!

Import info here... www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/all imported vehicles are subject to fierce scrutiny by Australian Quarantine inspectors www.daff.gov.au/biosecurity/import - this includes the crating and dunnage materials, make sure the bike is ultra squeaky clean before it's crated. sea freight is cheaper and it can be put on ship direct from a major US port to Fremantle. Air freight from the US, whilst quicker is more expensive and the bike will be transferred from one passenger plane cargo hold to another, with all the attendant risks of it getting lost or left on the runway. strongly recommend you appoint an Australian based customs broker to help you with shipping and import I've used Universal Customs Brokers - they specialise in motor vehicle imports. ucbrokers.com.au/

thanks so much for the help. I'll definitely look into all of this. I was planning to ship the bike in the container with the furniture. I have people helping figure out stuff from Perth. I will forward all this info to them. Very helpful. Hopefully it will work out. I really don't want to sell it!

Hi. I imported my Monster from the UK just over a year ago, and to be honest, if I knew before I left what a red tape nightmare and the huge costs involved, it just doesn't make financial sense to do it. If you can sell your bike and put that money towards the same here, you'll not be far off the money on an Australian registered bike and for your sanity, well worth it. Emigrating is a major enough move, and adding to that stress by personally importing a vehicle is not worth it. There are hundreds of bikes for sale - look at the dealerships as well as www.bikesales.com.au. I paid around AUS$3000 to clear customs on a 10 year old bike, that was before shipping and the various permits I had to buy beforehand. In the end, I could have replaced my bike for less than had I sold it in the UK and avoided all the time, costs and stress of importing it.... as well as been up and riding almost immediately, rather than waiting for a good 4 months before I was legal to ride. It's a tough call and emigrating to a different continent is stressful enough without having to wade through yet more red tape. Good luck with your decision and hope to see you out and about on our great Perth roads.
