Casey Stoner named as the 20th MotoGP™ Legend
Two-time MotoGP™ World Champion Casey Stoner was nominated as a MotoGP™ Legend on Sunday in Valencia, right after making his final appearance in the premier class before retiring from the sport.
The Australian becomes the 20th MotoGP™ Legend, joining an exclusive club, whose members are: Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Geoff Duke, Wayne Gardner, Mike Hailwood, Daijiro Kato, Eddie Lawson, Anton Mang, Angel Nieto, Wayne Rainey, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Kenny Roberts, Jarno Saarinen, Kevin Schwantz, Barry Sheene, Freddie Spencer, John Surtees and Carlo Ubbiali. Stoner concluded his career at the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana taking third position in a thrilling race ran in mixed conditions, five and a half months after announcing his decision to retire at the end of this season.
Big things were heralded for Stoner when, as a 15 year-old, he made his World Championship debut as a 125cc wildcard at Donington Park in 2001. Having graduated through the same academy system that also produced his future factory Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa, Stoner fully capitalised on the bold move made by his family of moving to Europe to further his fledgling career. A full time Grand Prix career started in the 250cc category under Lucio Cecchinello’s guidance in 2002, but it was a step down to the 125cc class the following season that saw Stoner’s talent begin to fully flourish with four podiums and a first victory in the final round of the campaign. In 2004 he challenged for the title, taking KTM’s first ever Grand Prix win and ending the season fifth overall.
A step back up to 250s with Cecchinello’s team in 2005 produced a thrilling battle with Pedrosa for the title as Stoner amassed five wins on the Aprilia, and the next year he and the LCR team debuted in the premier MotoGP class on board a Honda as the Australian displayed flashes of brilliance – which included a pole position in only his second race at Qatar and second place in Turkey – mixed with a few disappointing crashes, all part of the learning experience. He had shown enough to encourage Ducati to make an offer to ride on their factory team the next season, and what followed was a stunning campaign.
A maiden MotoGP victory in the first race of 2007 at Qatar was a self-confessed surprise for both rider and team, but once he followed this up with wins at Turkey and China a title challenge became a more than realistic target. His standout performance at Catalunya, where he battled toe-to-toe with five-time champion Valentino Rossi will go down as one of the great races in history, whilst he dominated the mid-season with pole-to-flag victories at three consecutive races at Laguna Seca, Brno and Misano. Stoner went on to secure the title with four rounds to spare, and ended 2007 with a total of 10 wins, 14 podiums and 5 poles.
Defending his title in 2008, Stoner fought rival Rossi intensely as the pair crossed swords on a number of occasions, their duel at Laguna Seca still being talked about as one of the greatest battles of recent years, and the Australian eventually ended the season runner-up to his Italian adversary despite taking 6 wins and 9 poles in a strong second campaign on the Desmosedici.
2009 did not run a smooth course for Stoner, a mid-season three-race break due to fatigue uncovered a lactose intolerance that had affected his physical condition on the bike, and he ended the season 4th overall in the standings. 2010 was to prove not much easier as he took only three wins – all in the final third of the season – on an increasingly hard to tame Desmosedici. By that stage it had already been announced that Stoner would ride for the factory Repsol Honda team in 2011.
The switch proved a resounding success as the 2007 World Champion displayed the same kind of dominant form that delivered him his first title four years earlier. Pole position and victory in the opening round in Qatar was a sign of things to come, and by the time Stoner won the race in Phillip Island to clinch the title with two more rounds to spare he had already taken nine victories. Added to that race success was an incredible consistency, which saw him finish off the podium just once – in the second round at Jerez where he crashed out through no fault of his own. Winning his home race in Australia for a fifth consecutive season handed Stoner not only his second World title, but his 32nd career MotoGP victory, as he took victory from another pole position – his 11th of the season; this represented a new record for the most poles in one season in the MotoGP four-stroke era.
Stoner went into the 2012 season as clear favourite after his dominance in 2011, however the first races revealed that Jorge Lorenzo would prove a much tougher challenge than the year before. In addition to this, rumours about his retirement had been rife from the second race in Jerez, which the Australian ultimately confirmed in Le Mans. His year was cruelly interrupted by a nasty injury obtained in a crash in Indianapolis, which saw his fracture his right ankle and damage his ligaments badly, keeping him out for three races. He came back from injury in Japan, yet it was not until his final home race in Phillip Island that he once again showed his true colours, with one of the most dominant performances of the year. He bowed out in the final race in Valencia with a podium finish, taking third in the championship with five wins, ten podiums, five pole positions and ten front row starts.
Stoner retired at the age of 27, having amassed two MotoGP™ World Championships, 45 Grand Prix victories, 89 podium finishes and 43 pole-positions.

Test debuts: Marquez, Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Stoner...
Rookie performances after their first day at an official MotoGP test.
Moto2 world champion Marc Marquez turned heads by lapping an impressive 1.081s from the top during a 28-lap MotoGP debut on the final day of a rain-delayed Valencia test.
Below is a list of some other first-day MotoGP performances by riders that have recently made their premier-class debuts.
Casey Stoner - pictured on his MotoGP test debut for Honda Pons - stands head-and-shoulders clear of the rest.
Conditions at the 2005 test were cool and windy on day one, when Stoner and Dani Pedrosa made their MotoGP debuts, then wet throughout day two.
This year's test saw a wet first day, when the likes of Marquez and fellow rookie Bradley Smith did not ride, with dry laps on the final afternoon.
Future double world champion Stoner later switched to LCR Honda for his first 2006 MotoGP season...

The provisional entry list for the 2013 MotoGP season names Michael Laverty and Yonny Hernandez as riding for the Paul Bird Motorsport team.

Exactly half of the 24 places (three more than this year) are for privateer CRT riders, with six rookies present. The only 'To Be Confirmed' slot is for a second Came IodaRacing entry, alongside Danilo Petrucci.
Avintia, which used FTR-Kawasaki machinery this year, is yet to name its 2013 engine supplier.

Dovizioso seeking answers for neck problem
"It seems that the problem is probably bigger than we had previously thought, and I'll have to undergo some further medical tests" - Andrea Dovizioso.
New factory Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso is seeking solutions for an unexpected neck problem that forced him to miss all three days of private testing at Jerez this week.
The Italian, returning to factory status after a successful season at Monster Yamaha Tech 3, should have been getting his first real chance to understand the Desmosedici this week, after a rain-interrupted debut test at Valencia.
Instead Dovizioso returned to the pits after just two laps on Wednesday, due to the neck issue - being described as a muscle strain - and was unable to ride thereafter.
One possibility is that the 26-year-old tweaked his neck during last weekend's Monza Rally Show appearance, but Dovi revealed the problem first occured during October's Sepang round.
“It's something I had experienced at the GP in Malaysia, where I crashed twice, and in Australia, where I crashed once, and both times I had physiotherapy treatments and anti-inflammatory medicine," said Dovizioso, fourth overall with six podiums this season.
"It re-emerged last week two days after a crash on my motocross bike, but the same treatment worked and I felt fine when I came to Jerez for the test. Unfortunately, it happened again after just a few laps, and this time we weren't able to resolve it with physio and anti-inflammatories.
"It seems that the problem is probably bigger than we had previously thought, and I'll have to undergo some further medical tests."
With Dovizioso sidelined, team-mate Nicky Hayden shared the track with Pramac Ducati rookie Andrea Iannone and factory test rider Michele Pirro, plus the Avintia Blusens CRT squad and several WSBK teams.
Full testing was possible on the first two days, but bad weather spoilt the Friday action, meaning Hayden's Thursday best of 1m 40.090s remained unbeaten.
That time is half a second quicker than Hayden managed when qualifying third at Jerez for round two of the 2012 season, but damp conditions during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend meant that the old 800cc qualifying and race lap records remained unbroken.
"Unfortunately, Andrea's fluke problem with his neck was a setback, but Nicky turned some good lap times despite the tyres being at their limit in the cool conditions," said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi.
Behind Hayden at the test was Iannone with a 1m 40.989s, followed by Pirro, riding in place of the injured Ben Spies, with a lap of 1m 41.265s.
With the winter test ban starting on December 1, Dovizioso - already scheduled to have a plate removed from his shoulder next week, inserted last January to heal a collarbone fracture - will now have to wait until Sepang in early February, for what will hopefully be his first full test on a Desmosedici.

'Useful' last test for Hayden 'despite everything'
"Things didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped, but the test has been useful despite everything" - Nicky Hayden.
Nicky Hayden did his best to provide Ducati with as much track data as possible for the 2013 Desmosedici, during the factory's final test of the year at Jerez.
With new team-mate Andrea Dovizioso unable to ride due to a neck strain, Hayden's input was of even greater importance.
Riding in sunny-but-cold conditions on the first two days, the American - preparing for his fifth season at Ducati - began with a full testing program on Wednesday.
He then posted his best times on Thursday, despite a small fall robbing him of optimal track time.
Friday's final day was spoilt by wind and rain, though Hayden still went out to complete a brief comparison between the hard and soft rain tyres.
Overall, Hayden set a best lap time of 1m 40.090s - the official (2010) race record is 1m 39.731s - putting him just under the best WSBK lap of the week and almost one-second quicker than the next fastest MotoGP lap by Pramac Ducati rookie Andrea Iannone.
“Things didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped, but the test has been useful despite everything,” said Hayden. “On the first day, we struggled a little bit getting up to speed, but we improved somewhat yesterday. We were able to evaluate the new frame and swingarm, as well as a few new settings.
“[Friday], though, the weather hasn't been kind to us. I did three exits in the wet, but it hasn't been dry enough for slicks. It would have been nice to ride in the dry today, as we wanted to confirm a few things and improve our pace, but nonetheless, we got through some things and have a lot of information to work with.
“Thanks to the guys for all the hard work this year. Now we'll look forward to February at Sepang.”
Team manager Vittoriano Guareschi confirmed that the main purpose of the test had been to decide on chassis and swingarm direction for the GP13.
“We continued the testing program that we started at Valencia, looking for confirmation on the frame and swingarm that we tried in the latter part of the season,” he said.
“Now we need to work at the factory over the winter in order to give our riders a competitive package at the first Sepang test in February.”
The Avintia CRT squad joined Ducati and the leading WSBK teams at Jerez.
The MotoGP winter test ban starts on December 1.

Pirro: Ducati test role better than CRT option
'Riding a MotoGP bike is the goal of every rider and doing it for Ducati makes it even more special' - Michele Pirro
Michele Pirro has described his role as a Ducati MotoGP test rider as a 'dream come true'.
Pirro jumped at the chance to join Franco Battaini as a development rider on the Desmosedici as the Italian marque strives for improved results in 2013 with Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso.
For Pirro, the opportunity to compete in several MotoGP races next year for Ducati was a more attractive option than remaining in the second tier CRT class.
“This is a dream come true,” the 26-year-old Italian told GPone.com.
“Riding a MotoGP bike is the goal of every rider and doing it for Ducati makes it even more special.
“I couldn't be happier. It doesn't even seem like I am a test rider...
“After testing with Ducati at Mugello they offered me the job as test rider and it seemed like the best choice, rather than continuing in CRT.
“I'll do fewer races, it's true, but I'll have the opportunity to show my worth.”
Pirro, who intends to return to racing full-time in 2014, says he will have the opportunity to compete as a wild-card at Jerez, Mugello and Misano.
Analysing his role as a test rider, he said: “When Nicky and Andrea get on the bike, their goal is to adapt the bike to their riding styles and improve their own performance.
“Instead, I have to understand the potential of the new components and make a choice.
“Franco [Battaini] will focus more on durability and reliability testing, while I will work on outright performance.”
Pirro claimed the best ever result for a CRT machine as he finished fifth on Gresini's FTR-Honda at the final round in his debut season in MotoGP at Valencia last month.
He capitalised on tricky weather conditions and a shrewd tyre choice to become the first rider on a CRT bike to notch a top-five result in the class.
