West renews with QMMF for 2013 as he wins local QIRRCH races
Monday, 14 January 2013 Australian rider Anthony West has renewed his contract for the QMMF Racing Team for 2013 in Moto2™ on the same weekend that he took a double victory in the Qatar International Road Racing Championship. This will be his second season for the Qatari team, after scoring two podiums last year and showing some promising form throughout. Mr. Nasser Khalifa Al Attiya, QMMF President, and West, signed the agreement after the second round of the Qatar International Road Racing Championship where West won the two races riding a Suzuki. Khalifa Al Attiya stated that he is very happy with the performance of the Australian rider and he believes that this coming season that will start on the 7th April at Losail International Circuit will be a great season for all the QMMF Racing Team.
West’s performance over the weekend were proof of this as he won Race 1 by over seven seconds from MotoGP newbie Bradley Smith and Alex Cudlin, as well as ending Race 2 victorious by over 15 seconds over Nasser Al Malki.

Stoner leaves door ajar to MotoGP return
Casey Stoner leaves the door ajar on the possibility of one day making a return to MotoGP despite confirming his move to V8 Supercars for the 2013 season
Casey Stoner has conceded that the door remains open on one day making a return to MotoGP, despite confirming that he will move into four-wheeled racing in 2013.
The two-time champion, who retired from competition at the end of the 2012 season, has now made public his move into V8 Supercar racing for the year ahead – with the 27-year-old having inked a deal to drive a Red Bull-backed Holden Commodore in the V8 Development series.
Stoner elected to quit MotoGP in May last year, revealing that he no longer had the passion for the sport in a press conference held at Le Mans prior to the French round of the campaign.
Confirming his move to V8's in an interview in the Sunday Telegraph, Stoner reiterated the reasons why he had elected to walk away from the motorcycle world, although he refused to rule out one day making a return – even if there is 'no chance' as it stands.
"Injuries weren't any part of why or retired, or that I wanted to do new things," he said. "Family wasn't a part of it either. I just fell out of love with the sport. We had a lack of respect from a lot of people around the sport and I didn't like the direction it was taking.
"We got spat at (by fans), they tried to knock us off scooters going from the motor homes to the pits, everything like that. Unfortunately they didn't like my honesty in the paddock. That was part of it, but more it was the direction of the sport.
"We lost a rider a couple of years ago (Marco Simoncelli) and within a month it was like it never happened. They want to see biff and barge and they don't realise our lives are on the line. We became puppets in that world and it had nothing to do with racing.
"I had no intentions of going back to the sport. But if I see the sport changing dramatically, to the point that it is interesting, there is every chance. But the way I see it going, there is no chance."

Repsol Honda, LCR Honda and the Factory Yamaha team began a private three-day test at the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on Tuesday.
The test marks the first ever laps for full time MotoGP competitors at the circuit, American CRT wild-cards having been the only previous grand prix bikes to test at the track.
COTA, which impressed on its F1 debut late last year, will host its first MotoGP race from April 19-21, as round two of this year's world championship.
MARQUEZ IS THE REAL DEAL There was no previous data available to any team and therefore a new track to learn for all - level playing field...

MotoGP™ Insight: New Qualifying for 2013
New MotoGP qualifying format explained Friday, 5 April 2013
The 2013 MotoGP™ season brings with it a selection of novelties and uncertainties, whether in the form of new riders or the brand-new Circuit of the Americas in Texas. For both rookies to the grid and seasoned campaigners, the new-look qualifying format will be an added challenge on every one of the 18 race weekends.
Last year and in previous seasons, those in the MotoGP™ class were presented with one hour in which to post their best lap time and determine grid position. That hour has now been split into an added 30 minutes of practice prior to qualifying, which itself is divided into two phases of just 15 minutes apiece.
The new system works like this:
- Pole position will be decided as the fastest riders go head-to-head across 15 minutes in the Q2 session; ten of the riders will have earned their Q2 placings thanks to their best times from any of the first three practice sessions
- Prior to Q2, Q1 will be staged – also lasting for 15 minutes. Those who finished outside the top ten across the first three practice sessions will compete for grid positions 13 and downwards. The fastest two riders in Q1 will be put through to Q2, where they will have a chance to fight for any position from pole to 12th on the grid
The new format is not only expected to intensify the drama for fans and media alike, but is also set to increase safety as Mike Webb explains.
"It’s separated qualifying, so that the fastest group runs together and the slowest group runs together," the Race Director begins. "It’s one thing for the show and the other really big reason is for the safety of the riders; each rider group will get a clear race track and be better able to do their best lap time."
Although the opening trio of practice sessions now have a significant bearing on qualifying, unlike in previous seasons, the teams have been provided with the extra, half-hour fourth practice in order to fine-tune their bikes.
"We’ll use the first three practices to get the right setups and then probably use the last free practice to do a long run, just to check the race situation," adds Ramón Forcada, Crew Chief to world champion Jorge Lorenzo. "It’s not exactly the race distance – but half an hour should be enough – and then we’ll prepare for the time attack!"
Splitting up qualifying will also add another benefit for the grid’s smaller teams, who will be able to enjoy more television time which is a plus point for their sponsors.

Arthur Sissis the best of the Australian riders as the MotoGP season kicks off in Qatar
'Stupid crash' ... Staring wasn't happy after race-ending mistake. After a promising winter, the sandy plains of Qatar proved largely desolate for the four Australian riders across the classes of the MotoGP world championship.
Arthur Sissis was the best of our boys, finishing 8th in the Moto3 race, with Townsville's Jack Miller coming home just one spot out of the points in 16th.
The news was less good from our riders on the bigger bikes. Anthony West struggled with a sick engine, eventually crashing out of the Moto2 race early, while Bryan Staring did the same in the MotoGP race.
Here's what they had to say afterwards:
Moto 3 Arthur Sissis, 8th AJO Motorsport "The start was very good and on the opening laps I was in the top group. We were going very fast, but with as the laps went on I did not feel so good and I could not keep up. I formed a group with Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Miguel Oliveira, fighting for sixth place, but in the end I was passed. I already feel like riding more races and seeing what happens at the next race in Austin."
Moto 2 Anthony West, DNF QMMF Racing Team "The bike was working perfectly in the race, the chassis set-up was at a 100 percent. But there was a problem with the engine. It was so slow that I couldn’t stay with anybody on the straights. Even when I was right at the rear wheel of others and having their slipstream coming on to the straight, I couldn’t hang on, they would just pull away.
"After the race, the mechanics found out that the engine overheated on the grid, which indicates that maybe a gasket blew, because there is no way in this temperature that the engine could overheat without a mechanical problem, since I am not one of the riders that revs the engine much sitting on the grid. The temperature was at 100 degree all the time and when that happens the electronic mapping puts additional fuel into the engine and you lose power.
"I was trying to override it because I felt ten times better than everyone else in the corners, but eventually I went a bit too hard
MOTOGP Bryan Staring, DNF Team GO&FUN Gresini Honda "I am disappointed because I didn't want to finish my MotoGP debut in this way. We made progress throughout practice but then I ruined it all with a stupid crash. I am disappointed for myself and for the team, who have helped me out so much. Hopefully I can make up for it in America."
Team boss Fausto Gresini: "Bryan made a rookie error, which was a shame, but he did a great job in practice and made a lot of progress. The team will help him out any way they can and I am sure he will be smiling again soon."

Marquez makes history
Sunday, 21 April 2013
Marc Marquez has become the youngest ever race winner in MotoGP™ at 20 years and 63 days surpassing the previous youngest ever Freddie Spencer at 20 years 196 days some 31 years ago whilst triumphing in Sunday’s inaugural Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas from teammate Dani Pedrosa.
Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo completed the podium, but it is Marquez who heads the standings after just two races in the top class. On Saturday, 20-year-old Marquez took over from former double title winner Freddie Spencer as the youngest ever pole-sitter in the premier class. He now becomes the youngest race winner, having seen off a challenge from Pedrosa on the other Repsol Honda Team machine. Although he is now level on points with Lorenzo in the championship, Marquez holds the lead as he is the most recent Grand Prix winner.
As the red lights went out at the new Circuit of the Americas – located on the outskirts of Austin, Texas – it was Pedrosa who seized the lead, while Lorenzo headed backwards courtesy of a poor getaway. A lightning start for LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl allowed the German to go second but he was soon overhauled by Marquez, Lorenzo and Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow.
Following Pedrosa and waiting patiently for his moment, Marquez courageously dived up the inside of Turn 7 on the 13th of the 21 laps. Pedrosa would hang onto the back of his teammate, but lost ground courtesy of a small error six laps later. To the delight of his crew, Marquez would take the chequered flag by one and a half seconds, with Lorenzo just over the same margin behind Pedrosa.
Having not tested at the venue a month ago, Crutchlow was more than pleased with fourth – having hoped for a top six result this weekend – as Bradl and Rossi completed that particular group, with the multiple title winner having overhauled GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista. The latter would also fall behind Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso, who progressed to seventh on the final lap and then avoided a last-corner lunge from his rival. Leading American rider Nicky Hayden and Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone rounded out the top ten.
Extending his lead in the CRT ranks, Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro enjoyed a strong ride to 11th place ahead of two prototype riders - English rookie Bradley Smith (Tech 3) and American Ben Spies (Ignite Pramac Racing) - as well as French teammate Randy de Puniet. PBM enjoyed its strongest weekend to date, with Yonny Hernandez sealing the final point for 15th position while Michael Laverty recorded his first MotoGP finish in 16th with the team’s own-built bike. Avintia Blusens maintained the symmetry in 17th and 18th, with Hiroshi Aoyama having overtaken Hector Barbera, while NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Claudio Corti, Gresini CRT rider Bryan Staring and Attack Performance Racing’s Blake Young (the single wildcard rider in the race) completed the field.
It was a hugely disappointing afternoon for Came IodaRacing Project. Danilo Petrucci was fortunate to stay upright when teammate Lucas Pesek crashed out of the race directly behind him, only to retire in the pits with mechanical gremlins only minutes later. Colin Edwards was also on the sidelines, as the local Texan hero racked up the unenviable fact of becoming the race’s first of three retirements.
With 16 rounds to go in this highly dramatic MotoGP™ season, the story continues in Jerez with the Gran Premio bwin de España in two weeks’ time.

Pirro joins Ducati line-up at Jerez 30 April 2013
"Pirro's GP13 will have some new development parts" - Vittoriano Guareschi, Ducati.
As well as factory racers Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso, Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will also be participating in this weekend's Spanish MotoGP.
Pirro had been touted as a 'replacement' for the injured Ben Spies at Pramac, but Ducati states that Pirro's Jerez status remains as a 'wild-card' and that he will be run by the test team.
As a wild-card, Pirro will not be forced to use Spies' 2013 engine allocation (as a replacement rider would).
The Italian is therefore free to race-test Ducati's latest engine developments, plus any chassis or electronics concepts that might be incompatible with the present Pramac engines.
“In addition to Nicky Hayden, who started last year's race on the first row, and Andrea Dovizioso, we'll have the test team, with our test rider Michele Pirro, who'll be doing his first wild-card race,” said team manager Vittoriano Guareschi.
Guareschi also confirmed that Pirro will be running some experimental parts: “His GP13 will have some new development parts that will help us to focus on the development for the rest of the championship.”
MotoGP wild-cards are allowed two new engines for their exclusive use during each event they enter. By contrast, a replacement rider is deemed to be the original rider for purposes of engine allocation.
Pirro - who retired from last year's Spanish grand prix, when he was racing the Gresini CRT machine - is scheduled to make three wild-card appearances for Ducati this season. Pirro is the first former CRT racer to secure a grand prix start on a factory prototype.

500cc/MotoGP: First and second race wins
Given the recent achievement of Marc Marquez, the below list shows how long it took the leading 500cc/MotoGP riders of the 'modern era' (1975 onwards) to claim their first and then second race wins.
The start date of the list means that Jarno Saarinen is not included. Saarinen, like Max Biaggi, won on his 500cc debut (in 1973) - and also won his second race as well...
Rider Name: Starts to 1st Win, Starts to 2nd win Max Biaggi: 1, 10 Marc Marquez: 2, - Jorge Lorenzo: 3, 19 Kenny Roberts Snr: 3, 4 Dani Pedrosa: 4, 9 Kevin Magee: 6, - Giacomo Agostini: 7, 11 Kevin Schwantz: 7, 12 Johnny Cecotto: 8, 9 Freddie Spencer: 8, 12 Daryl Beattie: 8, 30 Alex Criville: 8, 53 Valentino Rossi: 9, 14 Randy Mamola: 10, 12 Luca Cadalora: 10, 12 Barry Sheene: 12, 14 Wayne Rainey: 12, 18 Eddie Lawson: 13, 15 Casey Stoner: 17, 19 Wayne Gardner: 20, 25 Mick Doohan: 26, 31 Franco Uncini: 32, 34 Nicky Hayden: 39, 56 Kenny Roberts Jr: 42, 43 Marco Lucchinelli: 43, 47
